Staff at a Cheshire business are backing an 11-year-old martial arts champ by raising money to help send him to America.

lewis podium imageLewis Charlesworth has battled and won a place to represent the UK in the World International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Championships but needs to raise the funds to go towards his trip.

So, to get the ball rolling, Matthew Wilkinson from Brilliant Fires based in Poynton has donated a contemporary and luxury electric fire worth approximately £900 to give away.

He is the first business in the area to donate and he said he is also urging other businesses to get behind him.

Matthew said: “Lewis has done so well so we are auctioning off a fire to get him started. “If other businesses can get behind him then he will be able to get there.”

Lewis attends Warrior Martial Arts in Congleton and is part of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu UK Elite squad of 30 children from the UK who have been selected over the last several months of training and knock out rounds to represent the UK.

If the youngster wins he will be crowned with the title.

Warrior Martial Arts are trying to raise funds to help Lewis and his family with the costs of the trip. “I am urging the local community to get in touch with the club’s owner. We all need to get behind and support such a talented young man,” said Matthew.

Keith Hipkiss, instructor at the Cheshire club said the family welcome any spare cash.

“Matthew has shown real community spirit. The club has raised a small amount but whatever is raised now will help Lewis and his family along the way,” said Keith.

Lewis needs money for flights and accommodation to take him and his family over to California for the once in a lifetime opportunity on February 14.

Jiu-Jitsu ace Lewis trains six nights a week and travels to Walsall at least once a month with the UK Elite Squad to prepare for the World Championships.
